Curry House Kid

2019 · Channel 4 · Director / Producer / Camera

I followed dancer and choreographer Akram Khan back to the curry houses of Brick Lane where he grew up, confronting the family history and community he once tried to escape.

Moving between kitchens, memories of racist violence, a changing Brick Lane and the creation of a new dance work, I used one man’s return to open onto the larger story of Bangladeshi migration to Britain.

Food, family, dance and place carry that history, culminating in a performance built from the physical memory of restaurant life and the hostility endured by the first generation.
