Golden Oldies
2012 · BBC One/True Vision · Director / Producer / Camera
I followed Doris, Kitty and Frank, three people living on the margins of modern Britain.
Doris, 84, fiercely guarded her independence; Kitty, also 84, remained irreverent and determined despite serious illness; Frank, 72, was isolated in Liverpool but still possessed a sharp intelligence and bleak humour. Poverty, loneliness and declining health sit beside wit, stubbornness and an appetite for life.
Staying close enough to listen without turning them into case studies made the film a portrait of old age defined as much by personality and resilience as hardship.
THE TELEGRAPH
“A frank, unpatronising and quietly devastating documentary ... too many memorable moments to list.” — Mark Monahan
AGE UK
“Nick Poyntz’s film is a tender and poignant portrayal of living on a low income in later life and will make you both laugh and cry.” — Rob Mansfield
